Fort Dunree is a hidden gem with one of the biggest hearts on the Inishowen Peninsula. From the moment you arrive, the fantastic team set the tone: warm, knowledgeable and clearly in love with this remarkable place. Their grasp of history is impressive; ask anything and you’ll get a thoughtful answer and if they don’t know, they’ll fetch the colleague who does. The military museum brings the past vividly to life, revealing why this headland mattered so profoundly to the defence of a proud nation. Perched on rugged rocks above Lough Swilly, the fort surveys one of Donegal’s prettiest vistas; wherever you look, the views are simply breathtaking. Add an excellent café serving proper Irish comforts and you’ve the makings of a perfect outing. Give yourself three to four hours, at least: you’ll want the extra time to linger, explore and let the stories sink in. Don’t miss this place!
