Right in the heart of Ballyliffin, Ballyliffin Townhouse & Spa is a stylish, family-owned boutique hotel that manages to feel both polished and wonderfully relaxed. Whether you’re here for a golfing break, a romantic few days away or a family escape, it makes a superb base for exploring this corner of Donegal. I particularly liked that, despite its boutique credentials, there is none of the pretentiousness sometimes associated with the term. From cosy doubles and classic rooms to the more indulgent deluxe option, there is something here to suit tastes and budgets. The spa is another highlight, especially as it uses VOYA, one of my favourite Irish spa brands, whose luxurious seaweed-based products originate in Sligo. Ballyliffin Townhouse & Spa gets the balance just right.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Food is an important part of the experience at Ballyliffin Townhouse & Spa, and the kitchen team certainly knows how to make the most of Donegal’s local produce. From a hearty breakfast to a relaxed lunch or a beautifully prepared evening meal, there is plenty here to tempt you throughout the day. Fresh local fish features strongly, alongside quality locally sourced meats and thoughtfully prepared dishes that showcase both flavour and provenance. There is a real confidence to the cooking, without it becoming overcomplicated. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming too, making it just as appealing to diners as it is to hotel guests. Even if you’re not staying overnight, I would recommend calling in for a meal. I think you’ll be glad you did.
