Review
Doagh Famine Village, near Ballyliffin in Inishowen, is without doubt one of Donegal’s most memorable attractions. When I first visited in 2025, I was completely taken aback by just how powerful and engaging the experience was. Returning again in 2026, I found it even better. Created on his own family homestead, owner and curator Pat Doherty has built an extraordinary journey through Irish history, tracing life from the darkest days of the Famine right through to modern times. The experience is emotional, thought-provoking and, at times, wonderfully humorous. Demonstrations on the origins of Donegal poitín and the traditional three-day wake add even more character and authenticity. Pat may be modest, but what he has created here is nothing short of genius. Doagh Famine Village is heartfelt, honest and unforgettable, with remarkable stories brought beautifully and vividly alive. Quite simply, you haven’t experienced the real Ireland until you’ve visited this remarkable place.
