CityNorth Hotel
City North Hotel in Gormanston, just a short drive from Dublin and Northern Ireland, proves how an independently owned property can outshine the big brands. The accommodation portfolio is extensive, with room types to suit solo travellers, couples, families and business guests alike. Recently refurbished, bedrooms feel fresh and polished: think smart lighting, generous beds, spotless bathrooms and plenty of plug points where you actually need them. It’s comfortable, quiet and designed for modern stays without losing a warm Irish welcome. This is the second time I’ve endorsed City North in my Island of Ireland book and the upgrade since my last visit is unmistakable. Service is consistently friendly and proactive, from reception to management, so you’re genuinely in safe hands from check-in to checkout.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The Tara Lounge here at the City North Hotel keeps dining refreshingly simple and delicious. Instead of a maze of venues like other hotels, there’s one polished space serving two smart menus. Settle in for an easygoing bite from the Lunch Menu, generous salads, hearty plates and comforting classics done with care. Or, switch to the À La Carte, where better cuts, brighter sauces and seasonal touches lift dishes into occasion-worthy territory. Service is brisk, warm and genuinely attentive and the bar pours all the favourites, from crisp pints to well-made cocktails. Sunday Lunch is a highlight unfussy, plentiful and great value. Seconds from the M1 between Dublin and Northern Ireland, it’s an inspired alternative to motorway services and a reliably tasty stop whenever you’re passing.
