Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa, in Barnby Moor close to Retford, is one of those rare places that manages to be both wonderfully convenient and genuinely memorable. Located close to both the M1 and A1, it is perfect for an overnight stop, though with so much to discover nearby and being able to stay in somewhere so special, you may easily be tempted to stay longer. The rooms and suites combine traditional character with spacious contemporary comfort, and the Victoria Suite, once stayed in by Queen Victoria herself, adds a romantic touch of royal history. Dining is another real pleasure, whether relaxing in Bar 1650 or enjoying the refined surroundings of St Leger Bistro, where the food is fabulous. Then there’s the spa, which is quite simply outstanding. In 16 years of writing these books, it stands among the finest hotel spas I’ve seen and completes a truly special escape
