The Richmond Inn
Review
There’s something rather special about finding a traditional Irish country pub that also offers somewhere comfortable to rest your head, and the Richmond Inn certainly ticks all the right boxes. Located in the friendly village of Cloondara, beside the picturesque Royal Canal and just a few miles from Longford Town, this charming establishment offers a wonderfully relaxed alternative to expensive hotels. Proudly owned by the McPartland family, their commitment to genuine Irish hospitality is evident throughout. The accommodation comprises a selection of cosy, comfortable bedrooms, providing everything needed for an enjoyable and affordable stay. Whether exploring County Longford, travelling through Ireland’s beautiful Midlands or simply escaping for a few days, the Richmond Inn makes an excellent base. With attractive surroundings and exceptional value, what’s not to like!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I've always believed that some of the finest meals are served in independently run pubs, where good cooking takes precedence over unnecessary fuss and presentation. The Richmond Inn is precisely the sort of place I love recommending to my readers. Here, the emphasis is firmly on hearty, satisfyingly tasty dishes, generous portions and quality ingredients, rather than elaborate menus designed to impress. There's something immensely appealing about sitting down to a properly prepared meal, knowing that considerable care has gone into what arrives at your table. The welcoming atmosphere adds considerably to the dining experience, making lunchtime or an evening meal equally appealing. For me, establishments like this represent everything that's wonderful about Ireland's food scene. Good food, sensible prices and absolutely no pretension whatsoever

Lough Ree Distillery
There are some places you include in a book because they are good, and others because they have a story that simply deserves to be told. Lough Ree Distillery falls firmly into both. Set beside the River Shannon in Lanesborough, this wonderfully compact operation is, as I like to call it, the biggest small distillery

Roscommon Equestrian Centre
Sitting at the foot of the magnificent Slieve Bawn Mountain, close to the River Shannon, the Roscommon Equestrian Centre enjoys a setting that immediately makes an impression. Family owned and proudly run by the Kelly family, there is a warmth here that gives the centre a wonderfully personal feel.
