Review

There are some places you include in a book because they are good, and others because they have a story that simply deserves to be told. Lough Ree Distillery falls firmly into both. Set beside the River Shannon in Lanesborough, this wonderfully compact operation is, as I like to call it, the biggest small distillery I have encountered to date. Siblings Peter, Sheila and Mike Clancy have created something with genuine personality, rooted deeply in their own family history. Their parents first came to Lanesborough as teachers, met here, fell in love, and began a family story that continues through the distillery today. Each sibling brings different strengths to the business, and that sense of collaboration is evident throughout. From whiskey tastings and distillery tours to gin and vodka experiences, there is plenty here for drinks enthusiasts. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, as this gem deserves every bit of attention it receives.

The Rustic Inn in Abbeyshrule is one of those rare family-run businesses that feels woven into the fabric of the local community.
