Spread Eagle Hotel
Review
There is something wonderfully romantic about staying in a hotel that has witnessed over 500 years of history, and the Spread Eagle Hotel, in the heart of Jedburgh, certainly captures that magic. Lovingly restored by its passionate family owners, this charming establishment offers couples an affordable and characterful escape in one of the Scottish Borders’ most underrated towns. Forget perfectly level floors and modern uniformity; here, creaking floorboards, uneven surfaces and centuries of heritage create an atmosphere that simply cannot be manufactured. Jedburgh itself is a delight, with its magnificent Abbey, historic Old Gaol and the wonderful Jackson’s of Jedburgh Farm Tours providing plenty of opportunities to explore together. With Edinburgh also within reach, the hotel makes an excellent base for romantic adventures throughout the region. What makes the Spread Eagle special is its authenticity, warmth and timeless character. A truly memorable little romantic retreat, full of history and charm.

There are good farm tours, excellent farm tours, and then there’s Jackson’s at Jedburgh, which I consider among the very best in Scotland! Let me explain why. Set across 436 acres at Kershaugh Farm, this remarkable farming enterprise is run by fifth generation farmers Fenwick and Jasmine Jackson, whose passion for agriculture is infectious.
