Mellowes Adventure Centre
Review
Mellowes Adventure Centre, just outside Navan, is exactly the kind of family-run place that reminds me why I started writing travel guides all those years ago. It’s honest, uncomplicated and filled with the kind of fun that leaves children glowing and happily tired. Owner Steven Carthy has created one of the best adventure play centres I’ve seen in years – thoughtfully designed, full of variety and with great attention to safety without losing that sense of freedom and play. The business has two sides: the adventure centre, where kids can scramble, swing and explore without a hefty price tag, and a childcare centre that puts calm, caring routines first. Parents are well looked after too, with a lovely coffee gardenserving fresh hot food and treats. It’s great value, easy-going and refreshingly free of gimmicks. You’ll want to stay for hours – and you should.

Brogan’s Bar & Hotel in Trim is the kind of find that reminds you why you travel. For almost a decade, owners Maureen and Don Baker have stewarded a sensitive restoration, reviving a landmark and turning it into a lively destination. I’ve featured Brogan’s as a hidden-gem attraction,
