Fitzpatricks Tavern & Hotel
Review
Fitzpatricks Tavern and Hotel here at Lough Gowna is exactly the kind of family–run hideaway I love to discover. Around 20km from Cavan town itself, this freshly refurbished pub with rooms feels warm, lived-in and genuinely welcoming. Hosts Timmy and Deidre, along with their son and daughter TJ and Shauna, bring real heart to the place, proud custodians of a business that has proudly been in the family for decades. Bedrooms are cosy and comfortable, with good WiFi and the kind of quiet night’s sleep you hope for in the countryside. Outside, Lough Gowna offers superb pike fishing across its chain of lakes that feed into Lough Erne. While Co. Fermanagh in Northern Ireland and all of its attractions are all an easy drive away.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Tucked away on the shores of Lough Gowna, just 20km from Cavan town, the Fitzpatricks Tavern and Hotel is exactly the kind of family-run pub diners hope to stumble upon. Following a full refurbishment recently, the place feels fresh yet characterful, with owners Timmy and Deidre, along with the next generation TJ and Shauna, leading the welcome with genuine warmth. The menu leans proudly on locally sourced ingredients, turning hearty favourites into plates full of flavour and personality. Portions are generous, comforting and unpretentious, proper country cooking served with pride. A wide selection of drinks, from well-kept pints to spirits and wines, means there’s no reason to move on after dinner. Check their website or social media for regular live entertainment that completes the experience.

The Cavan County Museum in Ballyjamesduff is, quite simply, outstanding. Just twelve miles from Cavan town, it’s housed in the former Poor Clare’s Convent, a characterful building dating back to 1872 that still showcases many original features. Inside, you’ll discover one of Ireland’s great museum hidden gems.
