Walking in Snowdonia

A short walk to Cwm Idwal followed by a demanding ascent to a high peak on the Glyders known as Y Garn. The descent passes just below the notorious Devil's Kitchen and then meanders through mountain formations noted for their rock climbing, rare plants and wild mountain goats.

The walk starts from Ogwen Cottage which you can approach from Capel Curig or Bethesda on the A5. There is a Pay and Display car park, toilets and refreshments. Take the path to Llyn Idwal which can be picked up from just behind the toilet block. After arriving at the lake turn right following the beach. Ascend the broad north-east shoulder of Y Garn by a zig-zagging path and continue by the exposed and steepening ridge above to a junction with the main ridge between Y Garn and Foel Goch. Turn left for the summit.

Descend south then south-east to Llyn y Cwn. Follow a path north-east from Llyn y Cwn and down through a stone filled runnel on to a broad ramp and with the Devil's Kitchen cliffs on your left carry on the descent on stoney paths to a better path diagonally across the hillside to the foot of the Idwal slabs. Follow the path around the lake and return to the start along a stone track.

This walk should not be undertaken without the right walking equipment, map and compass. It is not advisable to do this walk on misty, windy or frosty days unless very experienced. (4.2miles - allow at least 4 hours)

The short walk around Cwm Idwal is a pleasant alternative for those not wanting to include the ascent. There is a well constructed path which takes you around the perimeter of the lake and

offers some magnificent cliff scenery.
