The Spread Eagle
Review
The Spread Eagle in Chesterfield is a wonderful example of a historic pub being given fresh energy, care and purpose. Housed in one of Chesterfield’s most characterful old buildings, and close to the town’s famous crooked spire, it now stands proudly as one of the area’s most appealing places to eat, drink and stay. Under new ownership, this much-loved pub has found its rhythm, with tapas at the heart of the food offering. These are not small, forgettable plates, but generous, tasty dishes created with real attention to provenance and quality. Add in carefully kept real ales, and The Spread Eagle feels refreshingly different from the usual chain pub experience. The six bedrooms are another real surprise, furnished to a very high standard and easily matching many hotels. For exploring Derbyshire’s chocolate box villages, landscapes and attractions, Chesterfield makes a perfect base for those looking for an affordable romantic getaway.
