The Somme Museum
Review
The Somme Museum, located conveniently between Newtownards and Bangor and just a short drive from Belfast, is one of Northern Ireland’s most compelling museums. From the moment you arrive, the museum sets the tone for a deeply moving and immersive experience, focusing on the First World War and in particular, the critical role played by the people of the Island of Ireland. The sacrifices made by the 36th (Ulster) Division and others are brought to life through detailed exhibits, personal stories, and artefacts that honour their legacy. The museum also encourages visitors to explore its sister site in France, Thiepval Wood, where the 36th Division launched their attack on 1st July 1916. Walking through these historic grounds near the (Ulster) Memorial Tower adds a profound dimension to the museum’s message. Both sites offer unforgettable insights into our shared history, and together form a powerful tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

The Regency Coffee House in Newtownards is truly a hidden gem. Family-owned and run, this welcoming café has one of the friendliest atmospheres I've encountered in Northern Ireland, making it an immediate favourite. Their ethos, local, fresh, and tasty, is clear from the first bite.
