The Shed Distillery of PJ Rigney is one of the most engaging distillery tours I’ve experienced while researching my new Top 100 Attractions on the Island of Ireland book. So many distilleries can blend into one, but not the original home of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin. From the moment you arrive, the team make you feel genuinely welcome, whether you’re here for the classic tour or the VIP experience. A short introductory film draws you into PJ’s wonderfully curious mind, before you embark on a fascinating journey around the world of botanicals and ingredients that shape each of their now world-famous spirits. The tour strikes the perfect balance between inventive storytelling, education and fun. Afterwards, you retire to the superb Honey Badger Bar to savour the team’s cocktail-making talents. Innovative, immersive and brilliantly delivered, this is a distillery experience worth every single penny for curious travellers to this curious country!

The Honey Badger Bar at The Shed Distillery is where the Gunpowder Gin story truly comes alive in the glass. My honest recommendation? Arrive early and ease in with a bite at the Jackalope Café, the food here is to die for and sets you up perfectly for the experience ahead. Then, save the Honey Badger Bar for after your distillery tour. This is where the real magic happens, as the team conjure a world of theatrics around each and every drink. The guys are experts at creative cocktails, beautifully balanced served with a genuine sense of fun making every order feel like a mini performance. The only problem is, once you’ve settled into this bar, you may find you simply don’t want to leave.
