The Old Stables Inn
Review
For many travellers, Dumfries and Galloway represents the gateway to Scotland, and few places offer a warmer introduction than the Old Stables Inn at Beattock. Your hosts, Emily and Richie, have spent several years creating an establishment where genuine hospitality, comfort and a relaxed atmosphere come naturally. With just a handful of inviting bedrooms, the emphasis here is firmly on personal attention rather than impersonal hotel experiences. Conveniently situated just off the motorway, this charming inn provides an ideal overnight stop for those travelling north or south, yet deserves consideration as a base for exploring this beautiful region. What particularly appeals to me is the honest, unpretentious approach to hospitality. Emily and Richie understand what travellers appreciate most, and deliver it with genuine warmth and enthusiasm.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Good, honest pub food at sensible prices is becoming increasingly difficult to find, but The Old Stables Inn at Beattock delivers exactly that. Its traditional menu celebrates familiar favourites, generously served without the inflated prices travellers too often encounter. Four seasonal menus throughout the year ensure there is always something fresh to enjoy, while dedicated children's and dessert selections complete the offering. Even the substantial 16oz gammon steak, the priciest dish on their menu, represented excellent value. Whether you're staying overnight or simply passing through, I would happily recommend turning off the motorway and eating here instead of visiting another soulless service station. With its modest car park, delightful gift shop and refreshingly unpretentious atmosphere, this is a real hidden gem. I'll certainly be returning!
