The Kilkeshin Hotel
Review
While I don’t usually endorse larger group hotels, the Irish-owned So Hotel Group, consisting of 6 hotels, created by the experienced Pat McDonagh, is an exception, and the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise shows why. Una Tuohy and her friendly team make you feel genuinely looked after from check-in to departure, whether you’re here on business, with the family, or stealing a night away as a couple. Just off the M7, it’s a superbly central base for the Midlands. My bedroom was cosy, quiet and spotlessly kept, with crisp linens, blackout curtains, plenty of storage, a well-sized desk and tea/coffee to hand. The bed was seriously comfortable, Wi-Fi strong, and the shower had a real punch. Portlaoise is charming, and the Killeshin is a dependable, welcoming base.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise offers two superb dining choices, each with its own personality and this is something that So Hotels do well. The Cedar Bar is my pick for something easy-going: a warm, lively space where you can settle in, enjoy a proper pint or cocktail, and tuck into crowd-pleasing dishes cooked with real care. Service is friendly, attentive and never rushed, making it ideal for a relaxed catch-up or casual family meal. For a more polished evening, the Cedar Rooms Restaurant delivers a smarter setting and a slower pace, with beautifully presented plates and flavours that feel confidently Irish, from starters to dessert. Whichever you choose, you’ll find a solid drinks list and a team that genuinely wants you to enjoy your time.

Mountmellick Embroidery & Heritage Museum
Co. Laois is steeped in story, and on my recent travels I’ve been delving deeper into its past. Choosing attractions for my books is never done lightly, and the Mountmellick Embroidery & Heritage Museum is one of the county’s brightest jewels. Set in Mountmellick, a 15th-century settlement on the Owenass River,

Fossey Mountain Springs Ranch
Just a short drive from Portlaoise, Fossey Mountain Spring Ranch feels like stepping into the American West without leaving the Irish Midlands. Owned and run by the charismatic Michael and Esther Lacumbre, this is one of the most original, lovingly crafted attractions I’ve visited in years.
