The Duke of Wellington in the pretty village of Danby is everything a traditional country pub should be, and its accommodation is every bit as inviting. Dating back to the 18th century, the pub is packed with character, yet the bedrooms offer a peaceful retreat away from the bustle downstairs. With only a handful of rooms available, a stay here feels wonderfully personal and perfectly suited to anyone wanting to experience village life near Whitby. Your hosts, Jay and Shane, had only recently taken over at the time of my visit, but with years of hospitality experience behind them, guests are in capable hands. The rooms are cosy, comfortable and thoughtfully presented, with a genuine home-from-home feel that makes staying here a real pleasure indeed.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Food is part of the experience at the Duke of Wellington in Danby, where owner-chef Shane and his partner Jay bring years of hospitality experience to your table. The menu celebrates British favourites, cooked with care, but Shane is never afraid to add a twist, so keep an eye on the specials board. With Whitby so close, fresh fish plays an important role, while the surrounding countryside ensures quality meat and produce are never far away. Even the ice cream is sourced locally, which says plenty about their commitment to supporting nearby suppliers. There is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere throughout, and whether you are staying in one of their lovely rooms or simply calling in for a meal, everyone is made to feel at home.
