Rathcroghan Visitor Centre
At Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, you will experience a unique historical attraction in the very heart of County Roscommon. We have qualified archaeologists to tell the story of Ireland from deep in pre-history to destroyed medieval castles. Want to connect with the ancestors? Explore the mythical world of ancient deities. Or walk in the footsteps of Celtic kings and queens. Then visit us at the Ancient Royal Citadel of Connacht. The Rathcroghan Visitor Centre has facilities that have been certified as a Tripadvisor Centre of Excellence for 2015. We have informative, modern and interpretive rooms chronicling 6,000 years of human activity. Our aim is to reconnect you with this mysterious landscape. Rathcroghan boasts a multitude of monument types: stretching from the first farmers of prehistoric Ireland, to the stony remains of a medieval metropolis created by the O'Conor kings of Connacht. Kings were inaugurated at the ceremonial heart of Rathcroghan and the site is witness to the rise and fall of great tribes, wealthy chieftains and dynastic families. Some of these went on to rule the whole island as high kings, ensuring the continuing legacy of this unique complex well into the modern era.
Review
Despite Ireland being a relatively small country, when it comes to historically important sites, it is huge! Rathcroghan for instance, is probably more significant than that of the site at Newgrange which is situated in the Boyne Valley. The reason being, it was at the heart of Rathcroghan where many Royal inauguration ceremonies took place. Rathcroghan has an abundance of monuments, prehistoric farmlands and the visitor centre itself unveils all of the secrets of this ancient land. I wouldn't suggest visiting this attraction without taking a tour with one of the centres highly knowledgeable tour guides. On my tour, I could of easily believed my guide had been back to those very turbulent times in Irish history. The site also has a great cafe, so no need for a packed lunch on that day! All in all, I really enjoyed my visit to Rathcroghan, I just wish I'd had more time to explore more. However, I do plan to return very soon.

The Rustic Inn
The Rustic Inn in Abbeyshrule is one of those rare family-run businesses that feels woven into the fabric of the local community. More than simply a pub, it is an institution, and after visiting, I was genuinely taken aback by just how much this welcoming venue has to offer. Whether you are cruising along

JJ Killeen’s
On the banks of the River Shannon in the ever-popular village of Shannonbridge, JJ Killeen’s has roared back to life. After a few years closed, it’s now under the stewardship of Liam Fallon, who has spared no expense renovating this gem into one of Ireland’s most iconic Irish pubs.

The Beach Bar
Set dramatically at Aughris Head in County Sligo, The Beach Bar more than earns its place among my Iconic Pubs on the Island of Ireland. I arrived expecting a good coastal pub and left having discovered something far more memorable. Steeped in history and standing proudly along the Wild Atlantic
