Thought I knew everything about chocolate until I visited Neary Nogs Chocolate Factory in Kilkeel. Spending time with owner Shane Neary, who, alongside his wife Dorothy, founded this thriving Northern Irish chocolate haven, opened my eyes to the extraordinary world behind cacao production. The charming name "Neary Nogs" stems from children's stories Shane's dad once wrote, reflecting the family's deep creative spirit. Initially launched in 2011 as a main fundraiser to support their daughter’s charitable work with orphans in India, the company has beautifully evolved, now actively aiding farmers in regions previously unfamiliar with cacao cultivation. A visit here transforms your understanding of our favourite treat, offering fascinating insights into chocolate-making. Tours are enthusiastically offered, but be sure to book ahead, Neary Nogs remains a busy working factory. The delightful onsite coffee shop further enhances the experience, serving one of the best coffees I've enjoyed in a long time.
