Midlands Park Hotel
Review
Right in the heart of Portlaoise, the Midlands Park Hotel has truly become the town’s hub and once checked in, it’s easy to see why. Step inside and you’re met by a stylish, modern design that still manages to feel warm, welcoming and wonderfully relaxing. The bedrooms continue that theme beautifully: cosy, contemporary and finished with a clear “no expense spared” attitude, where comfort and clever details come as standard. Whether you’re travelling for business, a romantic escape or a family break, this hotel and its bedrooms feel like a genuine retreat from the bustle outside. What really elevates a stay here, though, is the team, well trained, friendly and consistently going above and beyond. As a base for exploring the Midlands, it’s spot on.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Right in the heart of Portlaoise, the Midlands Park Hotel has dining down to a fine art, with three superb options under one roof. Guest or not, start the day in Trióg, a bright, welcoming space where breakfast is served with care and lunches hit the spot, ideal too if you’re squeezing in a meeting over coffee. For a more laid-back vibe, the Charter Bar & Eatery is the social hub: fresh coffee, a well-made cocktail or two, and a menu that works just as well for an easy lunch as it does for an evening meal. Then there’s Kelly’s Steakhouse, this is most definitely special-occasion dining done properly, with premium cuts, an open-plan feel, big windows, and private booths that add a touch of occasion.

Mountmellick Embroidery & Heritage Museum
Co. Laois is steeped in story, and on my recent travels I’ve been delving deeper into its past. Choosing attractions for my books is never done lightly, and the Mountmellick Embroidery & Heritage Museum is one of the county’s brightest jewels. Set in Mountmellick, a 15th-century settlement on the Owenass River,

Fossey Mountain Springs Ranch
Just a short drive from Portlaoise, Fossey Mountain Spring Ranch feels like stepping into the American West without leaving the Irish Midlands. Owned and run by the charismatic Michael and Esther Lacumbre, this is one of the most original, lovingly crafted attractions I’ve visited in years.
