Rooms on the River, sitting above Johnson’s Bar in the heart of Newbridge, is a polished little gem that gives bigger hotels a genuine run for their money. It’s perfectly placed for exploring County Kildare and even further afield, yet feels wonderfully removed once you close the door behind you. Your host Catherine has nailed the brief: boutique in style, but warm, relaxed and totally unpretentious. Expect smart design, quality finishes, spotless comfort and those small, thoughtful touches that quietly shout someone cares, in every single detail. Best of all are the river views, especially when dusk settles and the town lights start to glow. Whether you’re here for a night away, a gig, or a midweek reset, this is an address you’ll happily return to.

Johnson’s Liffey Arms in Newbridge is the kind of riverside pub that instantly feels like part of the town’s heartbeat. Sitting right alongside the famous River Liffey, it blends that warm, lived-in Irish charm with a refreshingly polished finish. Catherine, the latest custodian of this much-loved venue, brings a lifetime of hospitality know-how to the role, proudly continuing a family story that runs deep here. On my visit, it was obvious she genuinely cares, whether you’re popping in for a pint of Irelands best Guinness by the fire or checking into one of the boutique rooms upstairs. Add in a welcoming buzz, great conversation, and the possibility of an impromptu trad session, and you’ve got a proper Kildare gem. I can’t recommend this place enough!
