Jackie Clarke Collection
Review
in the heart of Ballina, The Jackie Clarke Collection is a real revelation, a living chronicle of Ireland told through one man’s lifelong obsession. Jackie Clarke (1927–2000), a local businessman of uncommon curiosity, and his wonderful wife, Anne, amassed more than 100,000 items spanning four centuries; the earliest dates to 1617. Gifted to the people of Ballina in 2005 and opened to the public in 2013, it now stands as the most important privately owned collection of Irish historical material. The venue, a former bank, adds gravitas, its elegant rooms perfectly framing letters, posters, maps and ephemera that bring pivotal moments to life. Step outside to the landscaped gardens and you’ll find a calm space to digest it all over a coffee. For anyone exploring Co. Mayo, this is more than a museum; it’s an essential, richly textured stop that deepens your understanding of Ireland, past and present alike.
