Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum
Review
Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum is an absolute must for history boffins and locomotive enthusiasts. This museum is set on a charming 1842 railway station in Darlington. It exhibits a world-class collection of locomotives, including the original ‘Locomotion No 1’ of 1825, the ‘Derwent’ of 1845, a Victorian express engine and a myriad of other smaller displays. It is a great day out for both adults and children with a games room to keep younger children entertained, a reasonably priced cafeteria, and a lovely shop with souvenirs and other goodies. Walking around the railway and seeing all exhibitions on display is such a wonderful way to learn about the local history of Darlington, the development of the railways, and their importance. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic!

Park Head Hotel & Twelve by Jacob Restaurant
The Park Head Hotel & Oak Room Restaurant in Bishop Auckland is a shining example of how independent hospitality should be done and why I don’t choose the big chains. This super-modern hotel offers an absolutely superb stay, where luxury is not just an add-on, it’s the standard here.

The Saxon Inn in Escomb
Personally speaking, I wish there was a Saxon Inn in every town I visit, life would be infinitely better for it! This 18th-century country inn, overlooking the villages ancient Saxon church and framed by rolling hills, is the very picture of rural charm. It captures everything that’s wonderful about English hospitality:
