Upstairs, the accommodation is equally impressive, with just four beautifully designed rooms where comfort and understated luxury come as standard. Booking ahead is essential, and booking direct is wise, especially with occasional packages available. The Freemasons is a Lancashire experience worth planning around.

Under Chef Patron Mike Shaw, who has led the kitchen for almost two years, there is a clear passion running through every part of the operation, from their bedrooms, to the food itself. His enthusiasm for great produce, his team and the customers who come through the door is impossible to miss. This award-winning pub has collected many accolades over the years, but its coveted 3 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence says everything about the standard being delivered. What impressed me just as much was the humility of the team. Despite the reputation, there is nothing pretentious here, only warmth, confidence and superb cooking. Having entered through the tradesman’s entrance, I even saw the kitchen itself, a space many chefs could only dream of working in.
