Duncannon Fort really is one of those remarkable historic sites where Ireland’s past feels wonderfully alive. Standing proudly above the waters of the Hook Peninsula, this impressive fortress has guarded this important stretch of coastline for around 450 years, and its sense of heritage can be felt in every stone. A visit here is far more than a simple walk around an old fort; it is a fascinating journey through the stories, conflicts and characters that helped shape this part of Co. Wexford. The guided tours, which can be booked in advance through their website, last around an hour and give visitors a real understanding of why Duncannon Fort remains such an important monument. Its location also makes it a perfect addition to a wider itinerary, with Hook Lighthouse, the Dunbrody Famine Ship and the Kennedy Homestead all within driving distance and well worth exploring while in this picturesque area.
