I take the choosing of my hidden gems seriously, so when somewhere earns that distinction, it has truly impressed me. Blacker Hall Farm Shop has more than deserved its heritage hidden gem status. Family owned and family run is a familiar and welcome theme throughout Yorkshire, and it shines brightly here. There is something deeply reassuring about a place where the Garthwaite family can stand over the produce with genuine pride, knowing it has been grown, reared or made on the farm, while anything sourced elsewhere has travelled only a short distance. This is not simply a farm shop, but a place rooted in education, tradition and care, with seasonal activities and bottle feeding helping younger visitors connect with rural life. I should also mention the excellent Barn Kitchen, along with the Courtyard Kitchen, perfect when you want something delicious on the go. Blacker Hall is Yorkshire at its most honest.
