Here in the picturesque Cotswold village of Avening, The Queen Matilda offers a charming retreat perfect for those looking to explore the stunning countryside of Gloucestershire and surrounding counties. Owned by Joanne and James, this former country inn has been beautifully transformed into a cozy accommodation filled with character. The rooms are delightful, each with unique touches that make for a memorable stay. While breakfast is a simple continental affair, it’s delicious and provides the perfect start to a day of exploration. Though The Queen Matilda no longer serves food, this is hardly an issue, as nearby Minchinhampton offers a welcoming village pub, the Crown just a five-minute drive away. I was lucky enough to experience a lively Irish Trad session, which added a touch of magic to my stay. Overall, The Queen Matilda is a delightful base for a romantic getaway, blending warmth, charm, and a genuine Cotswold experience.
