The Old Cottage Free House
Our menu changes with the seasons and is modern British, comfortably interwoven with some Mediterranean influences.
It ranges from traditional favourites such as fish and chips and steaks to freshly made pizzas and pastas with the chef's daily specials showcasing the finest market fresh ingredients. There's something for everyone and for all occasions too. You don't have to go for the full works if you don't want to, just have a snack and a lovely drink in the bar with your friends.
Wine is something of a passion for us and nothing pleases us more than when we unearth a new discovery that blows our socks off! We've got everything from crisp refreshing whites, trendy pinks to fat juicy reds by the bottle or glass so we are really looking forward to your reaction to all the latest treasures!
We are also very proud of our beers and we have a great selection of cask ales, super chilled draft and bottled beers to quench your thirst.
Just stop by for a pint of ale, read the papers and chill out or book a table and enjoy simple food prepared with care.
We take gourmet society cards for 25% off bill Monday-Thursday.
Review
At first approach, you could imagine the old cottage to be in a country village somewhere, in the cotswolds, but it's not, it's in a quiet leafy suburb of Cardiff called Lisvane, Llysfaen in Welsh. Upon arriving it wasn't hard to park at all, as there is more than ample parking here which given its location is brilliant. My only intention upon visiting the Old Cottage was just to have a look round as we do with most of our recommended restaurants throughout our Top 100 Attractions book, but it was lunchtime and the smell and sight of the Fish & Chips being brought to the tables was too much to bare, The decision was made! I'm having lunch here. I then to my surprise, found out why so many tables were laden with Fish & Chips, it was Fish & Chip Friday, which means 50% off that particular dish. I placed my order, sat down, and very soon arrived my condiments, cutlery etc. I was particularly surprised that the vinegar and tomato sauce were not your usual makes, which leads me to believe the manager of this restaurant truly takes the experience of all who eat here very seriously. My meal arrived only about ten minutes after I ordered it, which for those with only an hour for lunch is perfect timing. With Fish &Chips primarily being served in chip shops all across the country, this dish is appearing more and more on menus in pubs and restaurants across the land, some do it well and some do it not so well, the Old Cottage however are one of the few that do it well! The fish and batter melted in my mouth easily and the minty mushy peas were extremely good, I later learned the mint is grown in the pub garden, and they always source local fish, and other produce from local fishmongers and butchers. All in all, this was a great lunch, a lunch I am glad I didn't miss, next time I'm in Cardiff, I would certainly return here.
