There is something rather special about Allendale. It is one of those wonderfully friendly villages where you immediately feel welcome, and right at its heart you’ll find the delightful Lion House. Your hosts, Dave and Maureen, understand true hospitality, and in an industry where the personal touch means everything, that really shines through here. The main event for me is undoubtedly the food. Maureen is the chef, and what comes from her kitchen is honest, wholesome and delicious, with absolutely no pretence whatsoever. It is simply good food, prepared with care. Accommodation is small but beautifully considered, with a luxurious self-catering apartment upstairs and an additional guest room, making the Lion House a lovely base for exploring this remarkable part of Northumberland. Places like this are becoming increasingly precious. The Lion House is exactly why we should cherish our much needed country pubs. Use them, enjoy them and support them!
