A Once-Proud Establishment That Has Sadly Lost Its Way

There was a time when The Grouse Bar & Restaurant was one of Ballymena’s most respected establishments. Founded in 1982 by Carole and Eugene McKenna, it built an enviable reputation for excellent food, genuine hospitality and customer service that made every visitor feel valued. Indeed, I previously endorsed this establishment with considerable enthusiasm.

Sadly, my experience in 2026 could not have been more disappointing.

The warmth and professionalism that once defined The Grouse appear to have evaporated. Customer service, once its greatest strength, was virtually nonexistent during my visit. Management seemed nowhere to be found, when wanting to ask them about what I witnesses and while the attitude displayed by certain younger members of staff was nothing short of disgraceful. Their dismissive manner and apparent amusement at speaking disrespectfully to myself demonstrated a staggering lack of professionalism.

What makes this particularly disappointing is remembering just how good this establishment once was. A reputation takes decades to build but can be destroyed remarkably quickly when basic standards of hospitality are abandoned.

The Grouse once wore its crown with considerable pride. Unfortunately, that crown has slipped, and slipped badly.

Until meaningful improvements are made, I can no longer recommend an establishment I once held in such high regard. My advice? Spend your money elsewhere.
