Review

Few attractions on the island of Ireland deliver history with the scale and drama of Spike Island in Cobh, Co. Cork. It’s true that the United States has Alcatraz, South Africa has Robben Island, but Ireland has this extraordinary counterpart, layered with stories across centuries. From its early monastic roots to its vast 24-acre fortress and later role as one of the world’s major convict depots, every corner feels alive with the past. The guided experience moves at a brilliant pace, carrying you from era to era without ever feeling rushed, and leaves you with a deeper understanding of the lives lived here, both by choice and by force. The full visit, including the short boat transfer, runs at about three and a half hours and is time exceptionally well spent. Add a welcoming café, a passionate team of staff, and you have an unforgettable Cork adventure for every visitor.

Its sweeping harbour panorama is genuinely breathtaking, and from many bedrooms you can watch the water shift with the light from dawn to dusk. O’Donovan’s Hotel & An Teach Beag

Clonakilty is a town that wears its history with pride, and O’Donovans Hotel feels like one of the places where that story is still being lived. It’s rare I’m lost for where to begin, but here the past and present are so neatly woven that you notice it in every corner. Bedrooms are honest and cosy,
