Lappa Valley Steam Railway & Leisure Park
In the unique historic setting of the Lappa Valley you will find loads of fun things to do and discover! There are three separate miniature railways running through this oasis of conservation, where wildlife thrives in a protected environment.
As well as the trains you can enjoy our leisure park, paddle boats, canoes, crazy golf, maze. Woodland walks and play area. Gift shop and tearoom with restaurant licence.
Our steam railway is built to 15 inch gauge - approximately one-quarter of the size of standard gauge railways. We have one mile of track running through the Lappa Valley between our stations at Benny Halt and East Wheal Rose. The track runs on a section of the trackbed originally built in 1849 for a minerals railway to serve the mine at East Wheal Rose. The 10¼-inch gauge Newlyn branch line, which runs from East Wheal Rose a further half mile along the original track bed, was opened in May 1995. The 7¼-inch gauge miniature woodland railway is approximately one-fifth of a mile long and is a circular ride running through a tunnel, round the Trevithick maze, past the nature pond and back to the main station area at East Wheal Rose.
The locomotive and carriages are based on the 125 High Speed Train and the Advanced Passenger Train. We run regular scheduled services in season and some special events.
Review
The carriage closed, the whistle blew, and I have to say I was extremely excited as I journeyed along the ten minute journey to the final stop. If I was excited, I can't imagine how the children would be feeling as the train serenely travels through the magical woodland to the Leisure Park. When the train pulled into its station, I have to say I was completely taken aback. It's like a whole new world exists beyond the original station and this attraction has everything from a boating lake to miniature railways that take you on other journeys around the park, just to name but a few of the many things on offer here. Once paid, you can spend as little or as long as you like here being completely self contained, you could either stay just a few hours or the whole day!
