Hotel Newport, complete with its own car park, is a welcoming 30-bedroom hotel wrapped around the Black Oak River as it winds towards Clew Bay. It delivers comfort and value without cutting corners and rooms are modern, spacious and somehow still cosy. The staff are genuinely friendly, nothing is too much trouble, I know, I’ve had the pleasure of staying here. Location’s a winner: Westport is a short hop, while Achill Island is around 40 minutes away and the drive is so scenic it counts as an attraction in its own right. Newport itself makes a perfect hub for exploring everywhere in Mayo. You’re spoiled for choice for walks, beaches, heritage sites and great food. Don’t try to do it all in a day, stay longer!

Hotel Newport’s restaurant is the kind of place that welcomes everyone, locals, day-trippers, and overnight guests alike. True to its word, it keeps things simple, honest, and delicious. The kitchen is firmly rooted in Mayo’s larder, mindful of local provenance without breaking the bank. Expect a well-curated menu that balances Irish comfort classics with a few playful surprises, all cooked with care and served by a team who genuinely enjoy looking after people. Portions are generous, flavours are bright, and there’s always something seasonal worth trying. You don’t need a room key to book a table, but you may wish you had one after dessert. Whether you’re passing through or staying the night, it’s an easy recommendation, for this Co. Mayo chapter of my book.
