Gorta (Swatragh’s Famine Story)
Review
Gorta, Swatragh's famine story visitor centre, is a remarkable testament to Ireland's rich tradition of storytelling. More than just a historical exhibit, it represents the dream of pub and restaurant owner Dermot Friel, whose passion has created one of Northern Ireland’s must-see attractions. The centre not only celebrates 120 years of Friel family ownership of the Friels Bar & Restaurant, but also honours its former proprietors, Dr. Mooney and his beloved wife Sarah. What stands out is the deeply personal connection to the history, with narratives woven through generations. My tour, led by famine expert Cathy O’Neill, was engaging and informative. Cathy’s depth of knowledge and ability to bring the past to life made the experience unforgettable. Gorta offers an emotional and educational journey through a pivotal period in Swatragh and Irish history moreover and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in the resilience and stories of Ireland’s past.
