Ffynone Mansion
This pretty period garden surrounds an 18th century house designed by John Nash, architect of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and the Buckingham Palace extensions. Garden highlights include rhododendrons, azaleas, terraced lawns, and a water feature. The house and gardens at Ffynone were restored in 1987 by the grandson of politician David Lloyd George, and the estate is still owned by the Lloyd George family. Beside the gardens stand Ffynone Woodland, once part of the Ffynone estate but is now managed woodland with a mix of modern plantation and ancient woodland. For many years only the gardens were open to the public, but beginning in 2014 the house at Ffynone is also open on Bank Holiday weekends and other specified days from May-September. House visits are by guided tour only and booking is essential.
Review
Built in 1793, by the world-renowned architect John Nash, Ffynone Mansion is most definitely one of the brightest hidden gems within this book. So, why it has achieved hidden gem status with Top 100 Attractions? It is quite easy to visit Pembrokeshire and miss Ffynone Mansion altogether, however now you know, there is no excuse not to visit this amazing place. Lovingly restored in 1987 by the late grandson of Statesman David Lloyd George, Ffynone remains in the Lloyd George family. Due to popularity, coupled with the fragility of the house, Ffynone Mansion is only open for four months of the year, and a tour around the house for this very reason, is strictly by appointment only. However, having said that, the staff absolutely love giving guided tours around the house, so give them a call and book your place on a tour, you will not regret it!
