Review
Coolwater Garden is a small marvel just outside Limerick, shaped with care by Kevin Begley and his wife, Claire. Visitors come from far and wide for good reason. It’s only half an acre, yet nothing is wasted: paths knit together rock beds, water, and pockets of planting that reward a slow look. Alpine specimens are the stars, joined by rare plants gathered from far and wide, all thriving in microclimates Kevin has coaxed from the site. The setting adds to the charm, with views to Skule Hill and the ruins of Rockstown Castle. Visits are by appointment, which keeps numbers sensible and the garden calm; refreshments are offered, a thoughtful touch after a wander. Families are welcome, but the tour isn’t ideal for younger children who need room to run. For gardeners, though, it’s inspiring: proof that thoughtful design, patience and good husbandry can turn limited space into something memorable.
