Awarded four stars by Simon Jenkins in his ‘Thousand Best Houses,’ this incredible castle was built from a 12th century stronghold, and became the strengthened fortress Chillingham Castle in 1334. Much celebrated: Chillinghams’ rich history is tangible with thrilling tales of royal visitors, sword-clashing battles as well as the most exquisite rooms, lakes, gardens, fountains and even a tearoom, where you can sit by a roaring fire and enjoy some delicious refreshments. Guided tours provide the most fascinating insights into the past, and remarkably the family bloodline has remained the same since 1344.
