Bowhill House
Welcome to Bowhill House and Country Estate, the magnificent country home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and home to part of the famous Buccleuch art collection. Your adventure to Bowhill begins the moment you set foot in the Courtyard. Here you can pick up a map of our walks, chat to our Ranger about the wildlife and fortify yourself with some home baking in our licensed Minstrel Tearoom. If you’re an aficionado of fine art, a guided tour of the House is available on selected days of the year. Walls are lined with masterworks by Canaletto, Raeburn, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Rich tapestries splash colour and exude warmth while the French furniture and Meissen and Sevres porcelain evoke a refined era of cultural distinction. If you love outdoor activities you’ll find our Country Estate has miles of way-marked walking trails, while the field sports and fishing here are exceptional. Kids can go wild in our adventure playground or our soft play area and there’s a full programme of activities and events throughout the year to tempt you back again and again.
Review
The Scottish Borders has just as many, if not more stately homes and castles than any other region within Scotland and here at Bowhill House, being one of four of the families Scottish homes, Bowhill is actually ran by a Trust and every penny of its admission fees go right back into the running of the house and estate, there are not many estates that can actually say that. With so many extra things to do, as well as a visit around the house and gardens, I think you need to give yourself at least 4 to 5 hours here, maybe longer and even though they have a great cafe serving where possible a large amount of locally sourced produce, Bowhill House and Gardens is absolutely perfect for a picnic. All in all, I guarantee you’ll have an amazing time here and you don’t have to take my word for it, go and see for yourself!
